DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA – This week, NASCAR announced that all tracks would now feature exclusively right-hand turns for the 2026 season, leading to chaos at the first race yesterday.
The change was explained as reflecting NASCAR fans’ more positive association with the word “right” than the word “left,” according to NASCAR spokesman Bobbie Langston. “Doing market research, we just found that our fans like the word ‘right’ a lot more, and we decided to lean into it.”
At yesterday’s Daytona 500, a record 24 individual wrecks cast doubt on this monumental change to the sport. On the first lap, the three pack leaders crashed straight into the first turn, delaying the race for over 20 minutes as the track was cleared. Another notable wreck ensued on lap 17 with a five car pileup when all five drivers instinctively turned left on turn 3.
Joe-Bob Bojangles, #67, is unhappy with the changes. “I’ve been driving for 20 years, and I ain’t never felt my stomach do flips like this,” said Joe-Bob. “I didn't get into this sport for complex stuff like this. Bring back the left turns, man.”
Leaving the stadium, fans seemed irritated about the change. “I’m so used to looking to the left, and then looking to the right,” said one fan, rubbing his neck. “But now I have to look to the right, and then to the left. Man, my neck hurts.”
Bobbie Langston confirmed that the changes will remain in place for the remainder of the season: “I really think it’s a step in the right direction.”
